Fraidy L.: Cardio Exercise Log

Updates
  • Got to the gym really early to make sure I would get a spot in Tomas' spin class today. That wasn't really necessary because while I was on the elliptical waiting for the class to start I noticed that it took almost 45 minutes for the class to fill up. But I made it to the class and I got to do some extra cardio minutes on the elliptical. After spin Tomas did a 45 minute stretch class which I stayed for. Walked from the gym to Bryant Park for ice skating. The line was really long, not sure why I thought otherwise. Waited 20 minutes in line, got on the ice, after 20 minutes of skating they announced that everyone needs to leave the rink so they could send the zamboni out. So I went home.

  • The weather was miserable this morning. The ONLY reason I got on the bike was because today is Day 28 for both my NYC Bridge Crossing and Cycling Miles goals and I needed to complete them. I took the Williamsburg Bridge to the city. I can't believe I always thought it was out of the way but it's really from all the bridges it has the most direct route from my house. Went to Crunch Union Square for yoga. The last time I twisted my shoulder like this I couldn't lift my arm for a few days, and it took a month before I was able to go back to yoga. This time my shoulder doesn't feel that bad so I figured I would go to yoga and take it easy and not push myself too far. I was more than ok. There were only a few instances where it was painful but overall it was not a problem. Biked back home over the Manhattan Bridge and got some nice rainy day pictures.

  • I am really cheap when it comes to the MTA. Last week I bought a 7-day unlimited metrocard so if need be I could do last minute studying on my way to school. Having an unlimited makes me really lazy-I want to take advantage of the card and I'll take the train even though I could definitely walk. The opposite is also true. When I don't have an unlimited I don't want to pay any more than I need to-one round trip. Yesterday I knew I would be taking the subway to school for my final but it was at night and I didn't want to spend all day in the city doing nothing. So I biked to starbucks to get some studying done there. I wanted to go ice skating later but then it started raining.

  • When I twisted my shoulder yesterday I texted Anthony, just so he should be aware that I might be in pain today. The last time I twisted my shoulder Krystal told me to put heat packs on it when I sleep. Last night I didn't have heat packs but I found a heating pad. I tied it around my arm and woke up tangled in the plug-not the greatest idea, but my shoulder didn't hurt-it was just really, really sore. Here's how my session went today: I get to the gym and Anthony is like OMG what did you do yesterday. He was hoping the story was that I was really drunk and did something crazy, but he said Anti Gravity Yoga could be a close second. I tried to convince him it was ok and that I would be fine and could do upper body work and would let him know if I was in pain. We started off with a regular plank, with my feet on the tiny medicine ball (I can't believe I consider those regular). Then he moved me up hands and feet on a ball, like I was in a circus or something. It didn't hurt my shoulder but I must've looked like it did because after that it was all legs. Intense. I told Anthony I could do upper body and he had me push my arm against his weight. I couldn't do it and apparently I was making faces like I was in pain, so that was the end of the upper body exercises for today. My legs were shaking when the session was over. He wants me to be sore tomorrow, but he did say my legs are super strong. He put 55lbs on the leg machines, and 135lbs on the leg press machine.

  • I love the stationary bikes with the seat back. That way I can exercise and still study at the same time (although my handwriting gets messy because there is nothing to lean the notebook on as I am writing). Today I really wanted to take Anti-Gravity yoga. You need to get there early to sign up. I got on the bike while I waited for class to start. The instructor was Stacey. I am used to Illaria and Lucey's style, and her class is a lot slower paced than the others. I was getting bored. About 45 minutes into the class, we were doing jumps by pulling on the silk to lift up, I heard SNAP and felt my shoulder twist. She was really concerned and had someone take me upstairs to get an ice pack and fill out an injury form. It has happened before and I knew it would be fine (probably sore though) once it twisted back, although this is the third time it has happened in the past year so I should probably have it checked out. So I couldn't finish AGY and had to miss my favorite part-the tricks.

  • Spin. Tomas announced that next Thursday he will have a holiday spin class and everyone will get a cd with a spin mix, telling you when to add resistance and things like that so you can do your own spin class.

  • I took a two day break, but now that I'm halfway through my finals and the next one isn't until Monday, I'm back. I didn't go to the gym today, although I totally could have. I finished one final at 12 and my next one was at 3:30, but since the first one was the harder one I only studied for that and thought I would spend the time in between studying for the next final. So I didn't take diesel, but I also didn't really study. But I did go ice skating later on with my brother and sister (see pic if it actually uploads this time). I'm estimating the amount of time spent on the ice was about 40 minutes. I even helped someone random move off the wall, and she told me it was her first time ever ice skating!

  • It's finals week, so I got lazy and bought an unlimited metrocard so if need be (and if I get a seat) I could study on the subway. Which means I probably won't bike anywhere until next Wednesday.

By the time I got the gym today I was exhausted (from one exam and hours of studying for another one). So instead of running, Anthony had me walk briskly at an incline to warm up. Plank on a little medicine ball-I feel like a seal when I do those. Then a crazy ab exercise-lying on my back with knees in, medicine ball resting on my legs, straighten legs as much as I could, keeping the ball balanced, then bring knees back in. A bunch of chest presses, shoulder presses, balancing on bosu things, walking lunges.

At one point I noticed someone at the pull up bar and I asked Anthony if he would ever make me do pull ups. He said probably not, unless I really wanted to. Then he asked me if there were any exercises I really liked. I couldn't think I anything I particularly like, there is a lot I don't mind doing, but I can definitely say what I don't like. But then I said if I tell him what I don't like he would make me do it. He's so nice-he said if I really didn't like an exercise he wouldn't make do it (not sure if that is to my benefit or detriment). Krystal always said if I didn't like something that meant it was good for me and I needed to do it. I told him I hated when Krystal made me run up and down stairs. He said he doesn't have clients do that anymore because he was training someone who tripped and broke their collarbone (or something) when they were doing stairs. Then I said I don't like burpees. He said those are good and bad. They're a really good exercise but sometimes after doing a couple of them people get tired and lose their form. He also said that most of his female clients don't like box jumps, I don't like those but that's because I don't like jumping.

  • Hi Anthony (if you are reading this)!

I got to the gym today and Brooke was subbing BodyArt. Instead I decided to create my own workout even though I'm not really good at that and I forgot to bring headphones with me. My phone was useful because I was able to google some workouts but it was also a huge distraction. My workout went something like this: I figured I didn't have to warm up because I had just biked to the gym. I started with step up and curl, then I did chest press and skull crushers on the bench, and some kind of ab exercise I found on google. Incline pushups, plank, side plank, bicycle crunches. I think that's all. Then I did it all again.

On my way home I stopped into the bike shop because my bike was doing strange things. Ok, the things I thought were weird actually weren't, but my brakes needed to be tightened and they replaced my brake pads. I had no idea how bad my brakes really were until I started biking with the new ones (which explains why I was almost run over by a bus because I couldn't brake fast enough).
