Buffin declared yesterday to be Big Booty Thursday. That was fine with me, because it meant I could sing my Big Booty song. The boring details: band-walking, leg presses (200+lbs, baby!), hamstring curls, lunges, squats, squats, squats, and one final stair run where my legs turned to jelly. The fun details: While on the Smith machine (it's like assisted barbell squats), Anthony came up behind me, hugged me under the arms, and made himself into a human chair so that I squatted into his lap. If only all squats were like that. It was magical.
Yesterday in aerial silks class, there were only two of us, so I got my own silk the whole time. We were working hard! We worked on bicycle climbs, opposite-side knee hook hip keys, hip keys from the air, and starting learning the beginning wrap of a "Peter Pan." I don't know yet what a Peter Pan is, but I was more of a dead Wendy bird. I've been working on knee hooks for, oh, two-ish years. They are hard, because, you know, there's all your body weight, and it's supported by your knee. So right now I'm building up to it by starting from the ground. One of my next strength hurdles is being able to get my butt over my head in the air, and then hook my knee and hold on for God and Country. Oof. Onward, with baby steps to the big guns.
Bixi biked to work in the morning. The great thing with a bikeshare is that after I drop the kid at school, I can park anywhere close to a metro station and grab a Bixi to get to work. Montreal is a great biking city. Tons of bike paths and lots of pretty, quiet streets to explore. I tend to avoid the bike paths because they are too crowded during rush hour. Today I biked 5.25 miles to work in 34 min. Metroed back to the car because of rain but made it to the gym for a much needed run and weight workout. It's been a while and I felt getting in a good, sweaty workout.

I haven't been to Montreal in years; gotta go this summer and see what's new. Amsterdam, and all of the Netherlands has the best bike system based around the public transportation. Big cities should all adopt something similar. Boston is trying bike sharing and it must be working cuz they're expanding it.

I read something recently about the top biking cities worldwide. They noted how no US cities made the top 20. Montreal was the only North American city to make it, in 11th place.

@Kelsey - It's OK! It happens all the time. Accidental bullplopping is a side effect of enthusiasm. We all forgive you.

biked to and from work today, 60 min. total. Going in is a slight downhill the whole way, easy. Going back, slight uphill the whole way, sucks on a heavy, 3-speed Bixi bikeshare. My thighs were on fire when I was done. Finally got a new battery for my Fitbit so I can start counting steps again. The Fitbit even counts some of my pedalling. I got 3000 steps for the ride home. Shows how much I have to stand and pedal to get that dinosaur moving uphill.

That's so great that you can ride to work on your bike. What a great way to incorporate your workout into your daily routine. My commute is about 45-1hr so that's not an option for me:( At least I have the stairs at work, which help a great deal.

More gardening. Today was planting veg in the community garden with my plot partner, Katou. We put in tomato, peppers, shallots, red onion, eggplant, bok choy, brussels sprouts, red chard, celery, herbs. Already growing: rhubarb, strawberries and a ton of garlic. Thankfully we had preppedthe soil inthe fall so it was only 3 hours of digging and planting. Looks great and I'm pooped.

I don't have a veggie garden anymore. For many years I had a 4 by 4, then a 4 by 8, then a 10 by 10, then I was tending it alone so it got replaced by flowers and shrubs. My next door neighbors have a lovely huge vegetable garden and they share. I weed and water it when I'm out there. They share desserts on their deck, too.

I spent a lot of time studying on Wednesday and Thursday and didn't have much time for exercise. Finally Thursday night I decided to go for a run. Just ran up and down Eastern Parkway for a quick 2.25 mile run.
I'm doing a really good job of training Buffin on how to train me. He told me to do a wall sit, and then immediately pretended we were having a tea party, raised pinkies and all. I didn't even have to instigate the make-believe this time! When we weren't having a tea party, and when I wasn't flirting with all of the other trainers, we were doing hamstring curls, leg presses, lat pull-downs, and a motherload of deadlifts at 135lbs. Fraidy watched the deadlifts for awhile, which I enjoyed because I could show off my new pink weightlifting wraps. At the end, Buffin told me to do stair runs. I thought he was joking. He was not joking. Then I rearranged all the pictures on the trainer board so all my favorite gym boyfriends were on the same side. Trainer Mike yelled at me for moving his picture - I think he thinks if his picture is in the middle of the two boards it makes him cooler, but it does not. After I left the gym, the trainer board caused quite a bit of drama because they were all arguing over the order I arranged them in, and what it meant about who is my favorite. I like to keep the boys guessing.
Welcome to the halfway point of the challenge! Now for some triumphant fanfare: we've crushed 103 workouts, and eleven of us have zoomed past the 25% mark. What this means is that you're amazing, and super strong. Usually at this time, we'd tell you to keep it up, but you're so awesome, you don't even need us to tell you that. Instead we'll just ask you to keep blowing our minds. Also, where can we get a ticket to your guns show?
On Sunday, Flaming Mermaid Broken Star made our outdoor aerial debut with our new act "The Bomb & The Bombshell." We were a bit under-rehearsed, but we still pulled it off, and the little kids seemed to like it, which is good. It was really fun seeing a bunch of other aerialists perform, and getting to spend the afternoon in the sun. The video is not great, but here it is.
Today was officially a day off from triathlon training. I skipped Wednesday which was bike day and I thought maybe I would do it today instead. But I really needed to study and didn't feel like going for a real ride. I did end up needing to go to the school library at some point, so that was my ride. I did stop into the gym for a couple minutes along the way but it was mostly to stretch. I didn't really do much of a workout. I tried running but my quads are so sore. Would swimming make my quads sore? That's the only thing I could think of that did it.
No gym workout today, but I did spend 2hours in the yard digging out a 5x7 area of dirt, 6 in. deep so we can put in our new patio. When I finally stopped It hurt to lift my arms to wash my hair in the shower :)
Happy bike to work day! I was up at 6am again today. Started off by biking to the pool. Because it is bike to work day, Transportation Alternatives was at the bridge with free coffee and breakfast. Fun. Today was swim day on my triathlon training schedule. It said to swim 20-30 minutes continuously, that means no break. Last week I looked at that and laughed. There was no way I could possibly do that. The longest I tried without a break was 4 laps. After that I felt tired and would just stand at the wall and watch the other people in the pool making their swim seem so effortless. Today I swam 4 laps and really wanted to take a break, but I didn't. Every time I got to the wall my body really wanted a break but I kept going. I ended up swimming 25 minutes before finally taking a break. After that I was done. I didn't want to swim anymore. From there I went to volunteer at the bike expo for Gran Fondo New York. That was cool, giving the riders their packets, seeing people from all over the world who came for this and talking about biking with them. Stopped into the gym before going home. I didn't feel like running but I needed to charge my phone and the treadmills are the only machines with iphone chargers so I walked for 20 minutes. Later, TransAlt hosted a Bike Home from Work party in Dumbo, a lot of local food and bike vendors. I got my hair braided for free. They said it's a good way to prevent helmet hair. Now I'm back home and supposed to be studying but I really don't feel like it. Oh well.
It sounds like a dream come true. A group of scientists have focused the latest fitness research into a workout program designed to deliver all the benefits of high-intensity interval training in just seven minutes. The seven minutes are, of course, expected to be unpleasant, but now you really have no excuses for squeezing in your daily exercise. Our friends at Greatist.com tried out this program, and they said they felt they needed to do it twice before it felt like a workout. Have you tried it? Let us know what you think!
only exercise of the day was biking to work, 30 min. The lack of me time/exercise is frustrating. Must win lottery and find a live-in housekeeper soon.
So I was up at 6am today because I had a lot do and needed to fit it all in. The pool opens at 8am, I was there at 7:57am. Swam 750m (30 laps, approximately 1/2 a mile). This was the first time where I actually did X amount of laps in under X amount of minutes. I shortened my breaks by a lot. I also was getting really annoyed about the fogginess in my goggles and having to stop every few laps and let it clear up so today I spit into the goggles. It's completely disgusting but it really works. That could also be why I saved so much time. Afterwards I went to the gym and ran 2 miles on the treadmill. I should have ran one more so I could say I did more than a sprint triathlon today. I saw vonhottie at the gym. She was lifting some really heavy weights and it was impressive. Total biking today was 36 miles and it's interesting because it's all from my commute, just getting from one place to the next. It wasn't like I was intentionally going for a long(ish) ride. The reason why I biked so much today was because I went to the city for swim and the gym then had to go home to take care of things and needed to come back to the city for an appointment. I am starving right now and I've been eating all day. I'm assuming it's because of the amount of exercise I did.

told you so about the spit in the goggles. :)

I snorkel so spit is normal. I even put up with my grandkids spitting in MY goggles when they use them and hand them back to me. Sometimes they swim without gear because they think there won't be anything to see. There's ALWAYS somthing to see.

It's the day of the show y'all! I was very proud of my doubles act with BritBrit. I accidentally overinflated her, so I had some problems with her Velcro, but overall it was a success. There was a rigging issue during the show, so while Mama Silk fixed it, I took over the hosting duties and told seven minutes of impromptu jokes. Really, the secret to being successful in life is to wear gold lamé pants. Everything is better in gold lamé.
Buffin, lady Buffin (Exsoycise) and Sassletic came to see the show. I love having my Buffin and my muffin in the audience. Here is some video from Sassletic's phone. I'm not sure you can see it, but maybe you can. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=678756788932
