Since my beloved aerial silks guru, Heather, is out of town, I'm sampling some other aerial silks classes around town. Today, I tried a silks class at the Manhattan Movement Arts Center. The studios are vast and gorgeous, and the ceilings very high. Not that I can climb that high, but it's still nice to see the fabric go up that far. I liked the teacher, Polly, and found her much less intimidating than the instructors at NY Trapeze school. I learned two new tricks - the Rebecca Split and The Cloud. I liked the class, but it made me miss Heather. I'm so grateful that I've spent the past 10.5 months (!!!!gulp!!!!!) training with someone who is so exact and thorough. I was watching other girls go up in the air, all willy nilly wobbly woo, and while they have the upper body strength to get up there, they're not learning good technique. Heather drills every move very thoroughly, and I always feel safe because I know I can fall back on her specific instructions. I'm often frustrated/discouraged by how long it takes me to build strength, but I realize more and more how far I've come, and how little I would have progressed if I hadn't found her at the very start of my training. Without Heather, I probably would have given up back in December, and if I'd given up back in December, I never would have met Buffin, my personal trainer, and then there would be no Benchpressing Rainbows, no Legally Blonde Kettlebell workouts, and I would never have gotten to try my show-stopping cocoon roll-up. Perseverance is 90% of my success, and the rest is finding the right people to help you throw your butt over your head.
