Personal Goals
You can update your activities either on your personal homepage, or on a challenge homepage. To get to your personal homepage, click the "Home" tab at the top of the screen. If you joined or started a challenge, it will also appear as a tab at the top of the page, just to the right of your profile name and avatar.
Once you arrive on your personal homepage, or on a challenge homepage, you will see an activity form. If you are on a challenge homepage, only those activities associated with that particular challenge will appear. The activity form has an individual line for any activity that you're tracking, either for a challenge or for your own goals. Type numbers, enter text, use the up and down arrows or check the box as appropriate for any given activity "counter." You can add narrative text for the whole update in the general text field at the very top of the form.
Once you're done, hit the "COUNT IT" button. Your update will automatically drop into your newsfeed, and/or into the newsfeed of the related challenge. It will also appear in the newsfeed of anyone who is following you so that they can cheer you on and keep you accountable.
On your homepage you will see the word "Post" above the activity form towards the top of the page. To the right of that, you will see a number of recent dates. Click on the date you want, and your actvity form will refresh and you can update for that date. The date will be orange if it has activity logged, and blue if there is no activity logged. Click the little blue arrow to move even further backwards in time. Don't forget to refresh your homepage or return to today's date to track today's activities.
You can click 'Delete' in the newsfeed for any of your own posts to remove logged activity. Be careful, this can't be undone. Also, it may take a few minutes until the change is reflected in your goal totals or leaderboard. Just be patient, and refresh the screen.
In a word: Yes! Users of iPhones, iPads, or Android devices can access our mobile-optimized site, which is designed from the ground up for maximum mobile satisfcation. Simply point your mobile browser to socialworkout.com, log in, and you're off to the races. For more details on how to add our site bookmark to your smartphone homescreen, see here.
To tweak how often you receive email alerts from Social Workout, and for what sorts of "events," go to the "Email" tab on your Settings page. You can tune this as you like.
If you have not yet joined a challenge, we strongly recommend that as a first step. That's the whole point! (Look for the "Register" link at the top of any page if you are just getting started.)
If you are logged in, you can click the "Challenges" tab to the right of the screen to join a currently running challenge, OR to create a new one. Keep reading under CHALLENGES below if you need further instruction.
Don't forget to update your profile under settings. You're much sexier than the little blue man placeholder image.
Congratulations! We're happy to have you! As soon as you have some activity to report, you should make a challenge update. If you want to report activity you did yesterday, do a "catch-up" post. If you entered the wrong information, you can delete your post. Social Workout is more fun with friends to cheer you on, so be sure to follow your friends, both old and new. You can see how your progress compares to others in the leaderboard. If you're not in front of a computer, you can always track your progress on our mobile site, using your iPhone or Android device.
Now that you've joined a challenge, its time to log some activity.
You can update your activities either on your personal homepage, or on a challenge homepage. To get to your personal homepage, click the "Home" tab at the top of the screen. A goal is an activity with a specific timeframe that can start and end at any time. A goal can be something like running 50 miles in 28 days, not drinking coffee for a week, or losing 10 pounds in a month. For any given goal, you can see how many people are currently working towards this objective and what percentage they have completed. You can also view a log of your own activity for this goal over time. You can learn more about tracking goals below.
A challenge is a goal with a specific start and end date, and some people attached to it. Challenges are what makes this whole thing social, and not just a workout. Finally, A super challenge is just a fancy way of saying two or more goals combined together.
You can't! At least not yet. "User-generated" challenges and goals are high on our list of things to do, and we should have them soon. In the meantime, if you have a great idea for a challenge or activity, just shoot us a line via the Feedback tab at the bottom of your screen.
No, but we do have a sleek new mobile site, which acts almost the same as an app.To access our mobile site, simply point the web browser on your device to SocialWorkout.com. The new, streamlined mobile site will load automatically, and you can even save SoWo to your "Home Screen," complete with our sexy new bookmark icon.
Using the site is pretty self-explanatory, though are slight differences form the main site. The activity form has been given its own "Update" screen, and that's where you'll do all your activity logging for your challenges and goals. You can still add a message and/or a photo, and you can always cross-post an update to your Facebook Wall. When you log activity, you'll get a fun "pop up" telling you how much progress you've made toward your goals (and your challenge rank), and then you'll be auto-magically taken to your personal "News" screen. If you want to check up on a challenge, you can go visit your challenges section, and click on the challenge-specific "News," "Leaderboard," or "Info" screens. Unfortunately, at this time it is not possible to do a "catch-up" post from the mobile site.
You can return to Social Workout 1.0 by clicking the "GO TO THE BLOG" button on the bottom right of your homepage screen.
Yes indeed. Contact Oliver Ryan at oliver@socialworkout.com for details.
Click the blue "Challenges" tab at the top right of the page. You can search for current challenges by keyword or you can scroll down to view the list. You can also filter by recent or biggest. To find out more about a challenge, click through on its title. Or you can simply click on the blue "JOIN NOW" button to dive right in. (Note: Some challenges may be "live" but you can no longer join them as they're already underway, and you wouldn't be able to catch up. To see all of the "open" challenges, click the "Open" filter.
When you join a challenge, a tab will appear at the top of the screen. A challenge link will also be available on the right side of your homepage under "MY SOCIAL CHALLENGES".
Absolutely. You can either join a public challenge or create your own, and invite your friends to participate. First, let's go through the basic process: If you want to create a new challenge, you can click on the "Challenges" tab at the top of any Social Workout page. On that page, you'll see challenges that other people have organized, which you can join, OR you can click on the orange "Create a Challenge" button to start your own. Remember, if you are looking to go it alone, its best to join a current challenge or set a goal instead of creating a whole new challenge.
If you click "Create a Challenge", you'll land on a page that has challenge "templates," that is, descriptions of challenges that you could "start." Your job is to select one or more of those "pre fab" challenges to create your own. Click the "DO IT" button next to a challenge title, and follow the directions. You can "Supersize" the challenge by adding more goals. Once your done you will be asked to enter a start date, name the challenge, and invite friends.
No problem! We'll create it for you! Just click the "SUGGEST A CHALLENGE" button at the bottom of the page and complete the form using the "Suggest a new activity/challenge" option. You can also click the "FEEDBACK" link at the bottom of any page. We're adding more every day to our "pre fab" list, and we rely on our users to nudge us along. Here's an example of an activity and challenge we don't yet have (just to give you an idea of how to submit your request):
Activity: Salsa Dancing
Challenge: Salsa Dance Three Times a Week
Read the instructions above for creating a challenge. Once you select your first challenge, you'll have the option of combining challenges to create a Super Challenge by clicking the "SUPERSIZE IT" button. Add challenges by clicking the "ADD IT" button. As you add challenges, you will see them appear in the box to the right. Once you have selected all of your challenges, click the "CREATE MY CHALLENGE" button to the right.
Click the "REMOVE" button next to the challenge you would like to take away.
As you start a challenge, you will be prompted to go it alone or invite friends. When you click the "INVITE FRIENDS" button, you can choose Social Workout followers by clicking names in the top box or you can add emails to the box below. When adding emails, use a comma to separate addresses. Click the "GAME ON" button to send. Your friends will receive an automated email invite to both the site and the challenge. There is not currently an option to send a challenge invite link from your own email address but keep an eye out for it in the future.
On the the homepage for the incriminating challenge, click the "Bail Out" button to the bottom right of the screen.
If the challenge has a daily component, you can join up until the first day of the challenge. If it has a weekly component, you can join up until the first week and if its monthly or 28 days, you can join up until the first month of the challenge. You can join any challenge with an active "JOIN NOW" button.
You can find past challenges by clicking the "Challenges" tab and then searching by challenge name. The trick is that under the search box, you have to make sure "All" is selected. You can also click "Over" under the search box for a list of all past challenges.
A goal is an activity with a specific timeframe that can start and end any time. An example: drink eight, 8-ounce glasses of water per day for one month. Unlike a challenge, you are on your own and can start and stop tracking whenever you feel inclined. Even though you're tracking an individual goal, you can use the leaderboard (read LEADERBOARD section below) to see how you're doing compared to others on the site.
Sometimes you have options for how to track a goal in different increments, like Walking in NYC Blocks, Walking in Minutes or Walking in Miles. In some cases, you can also enter your own response, like Mood. We're working on condensing these to make it easier, but in the meantime, you can search use the categories to narrow it down or the list of activities to the right of the goals screen.
Click the "Goals" tab at the top of the page. You can search for activities using the categories provided or see a complete list of goals under "CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITY" to the right of the screen. Select the "DO IT!" button for each activity you would like to track. Have another idea? Click the "Suggest a Goal" link under "CAN'T FIND WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR?" to the right of the goals page.
Goals that you have set will pop up on your homepage activity form. Type numbers, enter text, use the up and down arrows or check the box as appropriate for any given activity "counter." You can add narrative text for the whole update in the general text field at the very top of the form. If you click the name of any goal you have set, an "activity counter" for that specific goal will also appear there.
On your homepage, click the name of the goal you wish to stop tracking in the activity form. Click the blue "Bail out" link on the top right of the goal screen. Voila!
Go to your homepage and click the name of any activity you are tracking to view a personal log. You can view a Daily or Monthly record and click Previous or Next to see additional dates.
Competing in challenges by yourself is excellent, but sometimes you need to band together with others to crush the opposition. Or, um, simply to support each other. Put your family, office, gym, school or political action committee on the board!
Once a team has been created, it will show up on a challenge leaderboard if at least one team member is in the challenge. That said, challenge hosts have the ability to exlude teams to decrease leaderboard clutter. (The default is to include all teams.) So, a challenge has a leaderboard for indidviduals AND for teams.
To find your team, or create one, go to the Teams Page. You can always get to this page by clicking on the link in the Teams Manager box that appears in the right column of every challenge homepage. On the Teams Page, you can search by team name, and you can click the team name for a list of members.
To join a given team, just click on the blue "Join" button next to the team name. If you don't find the right team, start your own by clicking the "Create A Team" button in the right column. Fill in the “Title” and “Slogan” fields, and click the “Create” button. You're done! Extra credit: When your team is created, you can add a team image by clicking on the “Edit “ button which appears next to your slogan on the team page.
How do I invite friends to my team?
To invite friends to your team and a given challenge, you can simply email links to the challenge homepage and to your team page. They will click on the “I Want In” button on the challenge homepage, and the blue “Join” button on your team page.
There is a leaderboard for every challenge and every goal. On the Goals page, click the name of any activity to left of the screen to get some initial stats like how many people are doing this goal and who's in the lead. At the top of the page to the right you'll see a bunch of orange bars that reflect the top 5. For more detail, scroll down under "VARIOUS RELEVANT NUMBERS" to the bottom right of the page and click the link that reads "See [Name of Activity] Leaderboard". A list of everyone working towards this goal will appear. You can check out the global leaderboards for all goals this way, even if you're not currently tracking them.
You can also go to any challenge homepage from the challenges tab and click one of the associated goals on the bottom right on the screen. Once there, follow the instructions above. Same goes for any goals or challenges you are currently tracking on your homepage. Just click the name of an activity (in the orange bars) and go from there.
Go to the challenge homepage and scroll down to view a list of participating teams in the bottom right of the screen. The top 5 can be found here and you can click "See all teams" for a complete list of all participating teams.
All teams and individuals appear on challenge leaderboards ranked according to their overall percent complete of the given challenge, even if that percentage is over and above 100%. So, if you've completed 500% of the challenge, you will appear above someone who has completed 110%. In general, we will display your percent complete number on the leaderboard, although for challenges with just a single activity (like, say, climbing stairs), we show the total for that activity.
We've also added a "rank" box under your avator an all challenge homepages. The box changes color depending on whether you've moved up or down the leaderboard since your last update.
Select the "Find People" link to the top right of the screen. You can search by name or use facebook to connect. Click the name of the person you'd like to follow and then the blue "Follow" button on the next screen. You can do that in reverse by clicking the "Unfollow" button when you decide its TMI.
You must be participating in at least one challenge or working towards a goal to post to the newsfeed. If you're not doing anything, what do you have to talk about? Once you have added a challenge or goal, click any open field in the orange bars of the activity form at the top of your homepage (or at the top of the challenge homepage). A text box reading "Talk about it" will magically appear below. Enter text here and click the "Count It!" button to post to the newsfeed.
If you've posted something that you want to delete or edit, click "Delete" below the the post in question, right between the "Comment" link and the little heart. While you can't edit the post per se, you can delete it and start over. If you've written a great deail of text, be sure to copy and paste that before you hit delete!
Follow the instruction for posting to the newsfeed. Once you have clicked on an open field in the activity form at the top of your homepage (or a challenge homepage), you will see the option to "+ Add a Photo" next to a tiny blue polaroid picture. Click the photo to browse and upload your image.
You'll notice on your homepage, in the news section, there are three options for your feed: All, Featured, and Following. Your feed defaults to "All" which shows updates from the people you follow, as well as featured posts from the Social Workout Editors or the hosts of challenges you've joined. If you only want to see news from people you're following, click on "Following." If you'd like to see only the featured posts, click on "Featured."
Good question! Since our challenges rely on the honor system, we have to hope that everyone is being honest in their updates. We believe that people wnat to achieve the healthy goals they set. If they lie, they're just cheating themselves. But, just in case there is any doubt as to a person's integrity, we created the bullplop button. The idea is that,if you doubt that someone ahs acutally done 1,000 Vertical Pushups in a single day, you would click the bullplop button and call their bluff. Then the questioned person can defend themselves in the comments. In short, the bullplop button is a simple form of community policing. Please use it as often as necessary, but please use it with care.
Alternatively, you can also "heart" an extraordinary post. We also encourage you to comment with abandon.
Absolutely. The first time you do it, we'll ask you for some basic registration information, but after that your accounts will be linked. You can unlink them at any time.
Yes. When you post activity, simply check the Facebook box just beneath the text entry from. You can toggle this on or off at any time, depending on what you're posting.
Coming soon!
