Feat
Step It Up
Pedometers are all the rage. The White House is way into them, as is Nike, and half a dozen heart rate monitor gizmo watch sellers, not to mention several iPhone app vendors. They can't all be crazy! To complete this feat, simply procure yourself a pedometer (analog or digital), and knock off at least 10,000 steps on any 20 days of the challenge. Yes, that sounds like a lot, but you may be surprised at how all those steps add up. Good luck!

Wait, we have a pedometer? I don't think Nike+ can count individual steps, from what I know. Or am I tripping?

Can you suggest which apps really work?
Submitted by Fraidy on 01.11.10 at 09:11.
I have the iPod Nano (but not the Nike + kit - yet) which is supposed to be a pedometer. I've really got to get that chip...

Suggestions on where to get a pedometer would be awesome -

I think places like Target and Walmart have them in most stores, and possibly smaller places like CVS or Walgreens. Just check out the fitness section next to the weights and yoga mats. Also, you can always find one on Amazon.com if necessary. :)

My pedometer arrived yesterday. First attempt next Tuesday. I'm really curious to see how close to this I get on a regular day, since I walk to and from work.

I really like the Omron Digital Premium Pedometer Model # (HJ-112),
they are cheap, and you can get it on Amazon.com.

Is anyone besides me doing this? I'm kind of suprised at how those steps DON'T add up. I mean, I was out wandering around the same block for over 40 minutes last night.
Submitted by whatodds on 01.27.10 at 07:26.
I'm finding they add up when I go on a few walks a day, running errands plus at least one trip where I walk instead of taking the subway or bicycle. Probably runs about 1 - 1.5 hours of dedicated walking plus the inside home/work steps that you do w/o thinking.

Borrowed my Dad's pedometer. LOL. Crazy how fast the steps add up!

Is it ok to count runs into this challenge?
Submitted by erikka on 02.02.10 at 01:44.
This isn't showing up in my NYE Challenge count for some reason. Is anyone else having that issue? I want to say I have marked off THREE feats before the last day!
Submitted by hktexan on 02.08.10 at 02:07.
I completed this challenge! I have a Yamax pedometer from REI..it's great!

I use the Omron HJ-720 ITC. I ordered it from Amazon. This connects to the computer and uploads the data. I've been wearing a pedometer for over 3 years now. At first I was barely able to get 5K steps a day. Now I am consistently over 20K and sometimes over 30K. My highest step count was last summer when I stepped 60K in a day. With the intentional extra walking, portion control and making responsible choices, I went from a way too tight and uncomfortable size 18 (weighing over 230 pounds) to a loose fitting size 8 jeans (weighing 150) in two years. This last year, I have maintained. Now I'm working on toning and building muscle.

I think this is definitely easier for those of us who live in a city with public transportation that works well. I knocked out 18,137 steps yesterday and probably lost a couple hundred because I took a cab to work (I was late). I also have a job where I never really get to sit down...

I love walking around. I totally would have done this feat, but the link was broken at the start of the challenge when I set myself up. Do it again in another challenge and I'm there.
Submitted by nfolkert on 02.12.10 at 11:42.
I enjoyed this one. I learned something. I'd like to take more steps in my day, that's for sure!

Work gave us pedometers to help encourage us as part of our health plan. I did 30k steps the last week of the challenge. Just forgot to post it
