Home Fitness for the Fellas

It is a sad and unspoken truth that the exercise DVD market is geared toward women. While I am a proud owner of a vagina, this anti-male mentality has always rubbed me the wrong way. Whenever an instructor references us ladies or talks about bikini season, my mind automatically registers that this is not a video for the menfolk. But it doesn't have to be this way. Gents, you too are entitled to spastic exercise in the confines of your own home! In keeping with this, I always note when fitness DVDs are testosterone-friendly. "Do Not Stand on Bosu"

So what does every instructor and trainer make you do? Stand on the frakking bosu.

Six months ago, pilates kicked my ass. Now, pilates has become a great warmup for ab blast and chisel'd.

Kilt Me Dead (Equinox with Eden Kessler)

45m pilates class with Eden Kessler - the class used to be 1 hour, but instead of being easier, Eden made the class more challenging. If you aren't going to work as long, you are going to work harder. I love pilates. I love the grace, elegance, form and powerful control that you have with it. I find moments of it in rock climbing that beautiful breathe, move sweep dip drop exhale.

longer workout

I definitely did more than I usually do today. I did a whole round of yoga stretches, abs work, push-ups, plie squats, and lunges at home on the mat before heading off to the gym. 3 miles on the cross-trainer, 3 sets of 15 reps each of triceps and biceps work with a 10-lb weight.

Fitness from the Far East

I first turned to belly dancing to mend a broken heart. This actually had a counterproductive effect — after class I would feel all sexy and hip-rolley and realize I had no one at home to try out my awesome moves on.  Eventually with time and a rebound or two my sorrow dissipated, but my love of belly dance, and later Bollywood and Bhangra, stayed strong. Since classes are expensive, I've learned to nurture my Belly/Bolly/Bhangra dance love through technology. Here, a list of my favorite Far East Fitness DVDs:
