Donation-Based Dharma Yoga Opens in Park Slope
Here's a promising equation: Brooklyn + donation-based yoga + Dharma Mittra. Thanks to Brooklyn Based (by way of Llaves) for the tipoff that Dharma Yoga Brooklyn will open in Park Slope this Saturday. For those not in the loop, donation-based yoga is hottish at the moment thanks to the success of places like Yoga to the People. Meanwhile, Dharma Mittra has been hot for 25 years. At 70, the man still puts most 30-nothing yogis to shame. He's the dude on the famous poster "Master Chart of 908 Postures," and his tiny studio on Gramercy attracts a hardcore crowd. (If you're not hitting handstand when you jump back to chataranga, you're in the minority.) The new studio will be run by Dharma Mittra's students, Lily Cushmen and Jeremy Frindel. Park Slopers should expect a tough, authentic pratice — likely more rigorous than YTTP. They should also expect to feel just right about the price. Grand Opening this Saturday with lots of fun yogi activiities, like a full day of chanting and a silent auction.

Workout
All kinds of naughty foods are rumbling around in my tummy. Thanks, SWD Partiers in BK!
Because CJ did a dessert ban I decided on a food ban, and failed. Then I went to the SW Delinquency party and ate so much dessert I had to induce vomiting...waaaayyy too many calories. OK I am sooooo kidding. The point I am making is that CJ is HILARIOUS and I am kind of inappropriate.

Cardio Rage
Brooklyn Man Killed in Dispute Over Elliptical
Here's somthing you're not looking for at your gym: Homicidal arguments about the cardio machinery. Sunday, 50 year-old Douglas Smith was bludgeoned and stabbed to death at Church Avenue Fitness in Brooklyn — apparently because he refused to give up his elliptical machine to another club member. Details are fuzzy, but the Daily News reports that witnesses saw Smith, a bodybuilding social worker, and another club member arguing over a Nautilus elliptical. Later, the other member returned with a friend, the two armed with a hammer and a knife, and "ambushed" Smith from behind. WTF?? The News reports that Smith had a masters degree in psychology and worked with prison parolees, as well as a bouncer at bars. Perhaps there was an earlier feud here, which will come out in court. At least one of the assailants, 19 year old Shawn Hing, has been caught. Meanwhile, maybe time to find a new gym in East Flatbush.
Overheard
Men in Bike Shorts
It's an art show in Greenpoint. Not at a gallery, but in someone's apartment. "Friends showing friends' art," says the organizer. The apartment fills up quickly. Two guys, stand in the living room crowd talking. One, an indie music engineer dressed in black, describes the bike ride he took earlier: Across the Brooklyn Bridge, up the West side, over the George Washington Bridge, through the Palisades and back. Sometime he rides to the Cloisters too. It's gorgeous, he says, and with the weather cooling down, the paths and roads aren't crowded. He rides a bike he saved up to buy when he was 15. It was his dream, but then he never rode it. The bike stayed hung in his garage for 14 years. When his last city bike was stolen, he called his mom and asked her to send it to him. He couldn't afford to buy another bike. "She sent the receipt too," he says, rolling his eyes." What does he wear to ride in the cool weather someone asks. "I wear bike shorts, but the sort that are attached to regular shorts on the outside," he says. "And then these leggings." Why the need for the floppy shorts? "I can't do the full spandex," he says. "No way."

c'mon Oliver... we wanna see it!
