Practical Eating

Upgrade Your Oatmeal

The U.S. Olympic Triathlon team doesn't eat oatmeal for breakfast, they eat "Super Oatmeal," created by Bob Seebohar, their former personal nutritionist. We're thinking that if it's good for them, it's good for you....

Ingredients: Rolled oats, water, whey protein powder, dark cocoa powder, ground flax, blueberries, raisins, and a banana.

Comments

ive actually been doing something similar for about a year now: rolled oats, water, whey (sometimes), ground flax, and blueberries.

i get enough chocolate during the day, so i skip it at breakfast. and, once blueberries are out of season, i'll switch over to raisins. i eat bananas as snacks throughout the day, so thats why i skip out there as well.

in any case, its good to see that what ive been eating is considered a "super" breakfast. i read a book called The Abs Diet, which had similar recommendations. you get a pretty good mix of nutrients, so you can't really go wrong!

<!--StartFragment-->

INGREDIENTS:

1.              4 cups old fashioned oats

2.              1cup oat bran

3.              ½ cup nonfat dry milk powder

4.              1/2cup low fat soy flour

5.              1/2cup almond meal

6.              1/2cup ground flaxseed

7.              1/4cup sesame seeds

DIRECTIONS:

1.              In a small saucepan, bring 3/4 cup of water to a boil. (I sometimes use ½ cup skim milk)

2.              Stir in 1/2  cup cereal mix and turn heat to low.

3.              Simmer for 1 minute, cover, and remove from heat.

4.              Allow to stand for 3 minutes.

5.              Serve immediately with fresh berries.

Around this time of year, I start eating oatmeal after I workout and this recipe sustains my energy throughout the day.
