Urbansherpa's Yoga Playlist

She's a yogini. She's a dancer. She sherpas her own bags all around the city. Who knows good yoga music? Who should you trust for bhangra dance tunes? Urbansherpa! Her amazing playlist below, with full liner notes after the jump. Get ready for songs that wake up your body, purge any pent up sadness, add a divine vibe to your practice, and just plain old make you tingle.

  1. "Aum," Gopika Poornima. An hour long loop of bells and this beautiful eerie voice saying AUM. It's amazing to play this whilst yoga-ing. Adds a seriously divine vibe to your practice. I also play this for my students when they're in savasana...for up to 10 minutes.
  2. "Agaetis Byrjun," Sigur Ros. It's just that good.
  3. "Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs," Oceansize. My students always ask what song this is...i like to say it describes why i'm single. haha. i'm kidding. But this song is really really great for feeling like you're pouring emotion out with your exhales. I'm a fan of purging any pent up sadness, frustration, etc...the breath can help you purge all negative emotions!! and this song is just gorgeous. something about the rhythm and melody make me tingle.
  4. "Bolo Ram," Wah!  super yoga-ey, and i ADORE it. it's sankrit chanting in a modern but elegant background.
  5. "Long Time Sun," Snatam Kaur. This song is played at the end of EVERY kundalini yoga class, as ordered (ok requested but saying "ordered" makes this sound even more preposterous! :) by Yogi Bhajan, the yogi that brought Kundalini Yoga to the west. The funny bit about this song being played after a yoga class is that Kundalini is old school...lots of breathwork, chanting, strange postures that most other yoga forms don't get into...and as old school as it is...this Long time sun song is actually an Irish Blessing song! haha, but i have to say that this song is very relaxing and beautiful. who wouldn't want to hear something as pretty??
  6. "Good Morning," Panjabi MC. I love my Bhangra music. Panjabi MC rules and this is an upbeat song to dance to. I sometimes choreograph Masala Bhangra Workout ® sequences to it! especially in the morning!
  7. "The Soundless Dawn Came Alive as Cities Began To Mark the Horizon," Red Sparrowes. great during 1/2 pigeon pose for my students!! and me...nice and EPIC...which is good cause you need to release EPIC EMOTIONS from your hips in Pigeon!!
  8. "Melodies and Desires," Lykke Li. The synth sound of this song makes me happy. I play this during early parts of class, it feels appropriate for "waking up" the body...maybe the first Downward Dog...or cat cow's.
  9. "Feeling Good" by Nina Simone. OHHHH YESSSSS i love this song and it is PERFECT for post class clean up. cause we're FEELING GOOOOOOOD! you know how i feel!!!
